The association attempts to display warning notices of this danger wherever it occurs. Please ensure you comply with the notices for your own safety.

5. WEILS DISEASE AND LITTER.

Over the years we have published many requests not to leave litter. One of the reasons that removing litter is so important is to prevent the spread of this disease. Weils Disease is and infection carried in Rats Urine which contaminates all it touches. The disease which is notifiable is serious and if untreated can be fatal.

6. ATTACKS ON ANGLING

How to respond
In recent years there have been an increasing number of attacks on anglers by misguided animal rights campaigners. Fishing waters have been disturbed, tackle shops and anglers property have been damaged, and threats of violence against anglers have been made.
None of these threats has yet become commonplace and most anglers should never be faced with such a situation. However, it is important to know in advance how to cope with type of problem:

General Security
Most attacks we know about have involved damage to property. The best safeguard against this is simply to be "security conscious". The following examples give the idea: -

  • When you arrive where you are going to fish, try to park where your car will be in sight.

  • Always lock your vehicle and lower the aerial. It is wise to have a lockable petrol cap and a foot pump in the car in case tyres are let down.

  • Make it less obvious that your car belongs to an angler. Hide any tackle left in the vehicle.

  • Keep an eye open for any suspicious characters hanging around angling club property. Report anything unusual to the club and to the police.

  • Record the registration numbers of any suspicious vehicles, descriptions of strangers, opponents of angling writing to local papers, etc.

Match Disruption
Plans to disrupt angling matches often leak in advance, so treat any rumours of this sort seriously and report them to the secretary or to any club official. In the event of any disruption to a match in which you are involved you should

  • Tell the match organiser at once, who should
  • Call the police and the Club (Tel No 01606 786787)
  • Take as many photographs as possible of the protesters.

Fishing Alone
There have been few attacks on lone anglers but it pays to special care when alone. How to react to any disruption can only be judged on the day, but some saboteurs are very violent so caution is advised. Remember that the motivation of most protesters is to provoke a "rise". If they succeed they will return. If they are met by an efficient but low-key response, they will probably get bored and go elsewhere.

Abuse of Water Bailiffs
Assaults and abuse of Bailiffs by non-members and poachers is on the increase. It is your duty as a member to help and assist the Water Bailiff. Remember: he is a member of your association, voluntarily working to preserve your interests.
